Sterling Hospital Performs Lifesaving Liver Surgery on 3-Year-Old Girl with Massive Hemangioma

A 7-hour surgery was performed to remove the massive tumor that affected 3/4th part of the liver

Ahmedabad : – In a remarkable feat of surgical skill, doctors at Sterling Hospital successfully removed a massive liver tumor from a 3-year-old girl. The child, who initially presented with abdominal swelling for months, was later diagnosed with a giant infantile hemangioma, a rare vascular tumor that affected 3/4th part of her liver.Dr Nitin Singhal, Director Surgical Oncology at Sterling Hospitals, along with his team, led this complicated surgery.

The parents of the child consulted doctors few months after they noticed unusual abdominal swelling. Initially dismissed as weight gain by parents, on further investigation the child was diagnosed with a giant infantile hemangioma. While hemangiomas are usually small and manageable, but in this case, the size and location posed a critical challenge.

Speaking on the complications associated with the surgery, Dr Nitin Singhal said, “Liver surgeries in general are very complex with risk of massive life-threatening bleeding and liver insufficiency post-surgery. Instead of the usual 1-2 cm hemangioma, we found that the tumor affected almost 3/4th part of the child’s remaining liver. Moreover, the location of the tumor involved the 2 out of 3 hepatic veins, touching the otherremaininghepatic vein.Traditional surgical removal would have left the child with a dangerously small remaining liver (around 21-23%) barely sufficient for her. Our single-minded focus was to remove the tumor which weighted close to 750 gms almost 8% of her body weight with limit the loss of blood and retain most part of the liver.”

Their expertise enabled them to remove the entire tumor while preserving nearly 30% of the functional liver. This minimized blood loss ensured better post-surgical recovery. The child recovered uneventfully and was discharged on 6th day post operation.
